During our recent eyecare outreach in
Lusaka, Nawa Vision Care had the privilege of visiting
Kasisi Children’s Home, an experience that left a
lasting impression on our entire team.
This visit came about through a heartfelt recommendation
from our longtime host, Sylvia Kasuda, in Lusaka, who
has welcomed us for many years during our missions. She
is herself a child of Kasisi, and it was through her
that the idea was born last year to extend our eyecare
services to the children of Kasisi. From that
conversation, a beautiful collaboration began.
Over the course of two days at Kasisi, we screened a
total of 239 children, staff members and members of the
community. Among them, 58 patients required optical
correction, either for distance vision or reading. In
addition, 29 individuals received eye drops for dry
eyes. We also provided eyedrops for allergy treatment,
something we introduced for the first time after
recognizing a significant need, particularly among the
children. We also identified several cases of eye
diseases, all of which required further medical
evaluation and treatment.
Thanks to the support of Dr. Celestine of Dr. Agarwal’s
Eye Hospital, who has been providing ongoing
consultations to Kasisi Children’s Home, these patients
were able to receive further assessment and care at the
hospital. Recommendations were made for appropriate
treatments, eyeglasses, and, where necessary, surgical
intervention. This important collaboration is made
possible through Dr. Celestine’s work, sponsored by the
Rotary Club of Midtown Lusaka, ensuring that children
and staff receive the specialized care they need.
Beyond the clinical impact, we were deeply impressed by
the exceptional care and organization at Kasisi. The
home provides for more than 250 children, and what stood
out most was the sense of love, structure, and dignity
present throughout the community. The dedication of the
staff, the orderly environment, and the genuine warmth
extended to the children were truly inspiring.
We are honored to now include Kasisi Children’s Home as
part of our regular rotation for eye screenings in
Lusaka. This marks not just a single visit, but the
beginning of a continued partnership rooted in care,
trust, and a shared commitment to improving vision and
quality of life for these remarkable children. |
